Job Description

Insider is hiring a paid editorial fellow to join our retail desk in January 2023. The six-month reporting fellowship is an entirely remote position based in the United States with flexibility on work location. We are also open to hybrid work from one of our offices in the U.S., including our headquarters in New York City.

Business Insider’s retail team covers companies like Etsy, eBay, and a slew of other up-and-coming direct-to-consumer brands. The retail reporting fellow will help contribute to our e-commerce coverage, from the retailers making millions selling products online to the platforms like Amazon and Shopify making it all possible.

The fellow will report to Gloria Dawson and have the opportunity to research, pitch, write,  and produce sharp analyses and features on how the retail space is rapidly changing in 2023. They will work on stories like Shopify pushes employees to take personality tests and post their results for coworkers to analyze. It's a divisive practice that's sweeping across boardrooms globally.” and “Unilever is laying off 1,500 employees as part of a huge reorg. But some insiders say it's blind to its biggest problems and 'too nice' to fix them.

We’re looking for someone who has:

  • A strong interest in reporting about the business of e-commerce
  • Knowledge of direct-to-consumer brands like Etsy, eBay, and other online marketplaces
  • Light HTML and/or Photoshop experience
  • A desire to get on the phone and interview sources

All our editorial fellows should have:

  • A passion for digital storytelling, voracious reading habits, and familiarity with digital and social media
  • Experience reporting and writing (prior internships and school newspapers are great!)
  • Ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
  • Proofreading and copyediting skills
