Job Description

Our mission is to inform and inspire the digital generation and become the most influential and loved journalism brand in the world. We do this by delighting our audience, clients, and colleagues and getting better every day. Our values: We are effective. We are “good eggs.” We communicate well. We get better every day. Our culture is based on effectiveness. It's the measure by which we work, make decisions, and grow. To be as effective as possible, we take ownership of our words, work, and ideas and we have accountability to our audience, clients, and colleagues.

Insider is hiring a health and parenting editor to add new voices to our coverage.

The editor will work with outside health and parenting experts to assign and edit articles, first-person essays, and opinion pieces for Insider. They will find and publish book excerpts, as well as original articles from authors. The editor will also work closely with other editors to source ideas and build on breaking news stories.

The ideal candidate is brimming with ideas on how to cover a wide array of health and parenting topics. They are sharp, quick-thinking, and comfortable juggling multiple stories on a short turnaround. They’ll be excited about publishing stories like “I'm 37 and living with stage 4 breast cancer. I had symptoms when I was 25, but doctors told me I was too young for a diagnosis,” “I've had MS for 13 years — here's what I'd tell a newly diagnosed person like Christina Applegate about what comes next,” and “The new popular parenting term in China is 'jiwa' — or 'chicken blood' parenting.”

Our style is smart, conversational, exciting, and geared toward a general audience. We value creativity, passion for detail, and diversity of ideas and opinions.

We’re looking for someone with the following:

  • A natural ability to pick out parenting and health trends and frame stories in a way that communicates to readers how it will impact them
  • Adeptness at balancing the demands of both accuracy and speed
  • A background in health and science editing or reporting is a plus
  • The ability to make complex ideas easy to understand
  • Experience working with freelance writers and subject matter experts
  • Comfortable digging through the internet to find that story that no one else is telling
  • Copyediting skills and knowledge of social media and SEO best practices
  • Prior editing experience is a must

This position could be remote or out of our NYC HQ.

The salary range for this position is $80,000 - $95,000. Compensation for the role will depend on a number of factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies, and experience and may fall outside of the range shown. Insider offers a competitive total rewards package, which includes a 401k match, healthcare coverage, and a broad range of other benefits.
