Our in-house content studio, Smart Brevity Studio, communicates for brand partners in Axios’ signature style. We are a team of writers, producers, and visual artists looking to communicate a brand’s message effectively and creatively by way of video, illustration, web design, and writing. Why it matters: Our growing studio team is looking for a skilled and enthusiastic Senior Cinematographer/Editor to contribute to a wide range of branded (and sometimes editorial) video projects. This addition will assist in the creation of smart, creative content from pre to post production.

The details: In this role, you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Leading video shoots in the field, in studios, or virtually
  • Capturing a wide range of footage from interviews to b-roll to planned studio shots
  • Editing together animation, b-roll, interviews, stock footage, and photos into compelling video pieces
  • Doing sound design for animated and mixed media videos
  • Hiring and directing small crews to assist on shoots
  • Transporting, setting up, and operating production equipment including cameras, mics, lights, and backdrops
  • Ingesting footage, creating proxies, and managing media in an organized manner
  • Researching and acquiring assets for video creation including music, stock footage, news clips, VO, and sound effects
  • Creating moodboards, shotlists, or storyboards for shoots
  • Collaborating and brainstorming with producers, directors, and designers

  • Ability to work independently or with a team
  • Ability to work with freelance crews and direct them on sets
  • Ability to edit a video from start to finish
  • Ability to professionally collaborate and communicate with clients on set
  • Mastery of Premiere Pro
  • Basic knowledge of After Effects and ability to create simple motion graphics like lower thirds or title cards
  • Up to date knowledge of video and audio equipment and related accessories
  • Ability to prepare a set with backdrops, lights, cameras, etc.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and quick turnarounds
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Attention to detail

Important to note: 

  • Given COVID, this role is currently heavier on the editing side of things than the cinematography side of things.
  • Travel (primarily domestic) will occasionally be required.
  • We work with small crews, often 1-5 people.
  • Our gear is in Arlington, VA so it’s easiest if the candidate is in the DMV area, or open to relocating. However, we would consider allowing for other locations if the candidate and situation is right.
