Urban Outfitters is a specialty retailer and wholesaler which sells clothing and merchandise through the Anthropologie, Free People, Terrain and Urban Outfitters stores.
The company operates 176 Urban Outfitters stores in the United States, Canada, and Europe, two web sites and a catalog; 153 Anthropologie stores, a web site, catalog and Leifsdottir, Anthropologie's recently launched wholesale concept; Free People Wholesale, which sells its product to approximately 1,400 specialty stores and select department stores; 42 Free People stores, a web-site and catalog; Leifsdottir wholesale, which sells its product to approximately 65 specialty and select department stores; and 1 Terrain garden center.
Urban Outfitters stores are targeted toward the educated, urban-minded individual in the 18 to 30 year-old range with men's and women's clothing and accessories. Anthropologie caters to the fashionable, educated and creative woman age 30 to 45 with a unique product assortment that includes casual apparel and accessories, home furnishings and a diverse array of gifts and decorative items. Free People is aimed at young women with a distinctive assortment of apparel, accessories and housewares.
During the year ended January 31, 2011, the Company opened a total of 46 new stores including: 21 Urban Outfitters stores, 16 Anthropologie stores and 9 Free People stores.
In fiscal 2011, Urban Outfitters had revenues of $2.27 billion and net income of $272.9 million.
History
The company started with a small store
in 1970. Situated in a Philadelphia row house several blocks
from The University of Pennsylvania, the first Urban Outfitters
revolutionized the fashion world by offering an eclectic and
funky mix of merchandise for both home and wardrobe. Thirty-three
years later, the Company has grown to manage three distinct brands
providing fashion essentials for diverse customers: Urban
Outfitters, Anthropologie, and Free People.
Free People, the company's wholesale brand,
designs and markets young women's clothing and opened its first
store in Paramus, NJ in November 2002.
