Tanger Factory Outlet Centers, Inc., is a publicly-traded Real Estate Investment Trust headquartered in Greensboro, NC. It presently owns and operates a portfolio of 44 upscale outlet shopping centers in 26 states coast to coast, totaling approximately 13.3 million square feet leased to over 2,800 stores operated by more than 470 different brand name companies.

More than 160 million shoppers visit Tanger Outlet Centers annually. The company says nearly 70% of shoppers at its outlets are women age 25-54.

Some of the brands found at Tanger Outlets are Banana Republic, Coach, Gap Outlet, Nike, Old Navy, Polo Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and more.

For 2012, Tanger reported revenues of $356.9 million and net income of $56.4 million.

Tanger says it has 165 full-time employees, located at corporate headquarters in North Carolina, its regional office in New York and 38 business offices. It also employs 277 part-time employees at various locations.


In 1981, Stanley Tanger (1923-2010) pioneered the Outlet Industry by building the country’s first authentic outlet shopping center in Burlington, NC. This was not only the beginning of Tanger Factory Outlet Centers, Inc., but also of a thriving retail venue – the Outlet Industry, which has grown to hundreds of outlet centers worldwide today.

Steven Tanger (current President and Chief Executive Officer as of 2009) joined forces with his father Stanley in 1986 as the company’s fourth employee. Under their leadership, the company prospered and grew to 13 outlet centers by 1992. Then, in 1993 Tanger led the way again by becoming the first outlet center developer to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange as a publicly traded Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT).
