Syracuse University is a major university located in Central New York in the city of Syracuse. It was founded in 1870.
The university is situated on 200 acres on a hilltop overlooking downtown Syracuse; the main campus has 170 buildings.
The school's nickname is the Orange and is a member of the Big East athletic conference. It is best known for the Carrier Dome, an indoor athletic dome built in 1980 that seats nearly 50,000. Both the school's basketball and football teams play in the Carrier Dome.
There are approximately 12,491 undergraduate students enrolled at Syracuse and 5,000 graduate students. The student body comes from all 50 states and more than 115 foreign countries.
