Website: http://www.staterbros.com Stater Bros. is the largest privately-owned supermarket chain in Southern California. The company operates 162 full-service supermarkets in the six counties of San Bernadino, Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego and Kern. Stater Bros. also owns and operates Heartland Farms, provider of Knudsen Dairy products to Southern California. The company's main office and distribution center is in Colton, CA. The company opened its newest supermarket in December in Apple Valley, CA. In 2004, Stater Bros. reported sales of $3.7 billion. History Twin brothers Leo and Cleo Slater opened their first Stater Bros. supermarket in Yucaipa, CA on August 17, 1936. They purchased the market from W.A. Davis with a $600 downpayment and first month payment of $300. The brothers would soon be joined by their other brother Leroy in the new business. In April 1948, the brothers opened their first "super" market in Riverside, CA with 12,500 square feet which included fluorescent lighting, air cooling and an intercom system that could play music. In 1983, Stater Bros. was sold to an investment group that included La Cedena Investments, headed by current CEO Jack Brown and other members of the company's senior management.
