Progressive is the nation's third-largest auto insurance company. Customers can purchase insurance from agents or directly from the company's Internet site. Progressive also sells motorcycle, boat, and personal watercraft insurance over the Internet.

Progressive works with more than 30,000 independent insurance agencies. The company has more than 450 claims branches and 22 service centers. Progressive does business in every state except Massachusetts.

In 2005, the company reported revenues of $14.3 billion and net income of $1.39 billion.

The company has more than 12 million customers.

History

On March 10, 1937, Joseph Lewis and Jack Green started Progressive Mutual Insurance Company because they wanted to provide vehicle owners with security and protection. They also thought it was a good investment for a couple of lawyers who were just getting started.

Progressive was innovative from the start. For the first time, customers could pay their premiums in installments, an option that appealed to workers who could not afford annual premiums. They could even get drive-in claims service. Progressive wanted to make it easy for average people to protect one of their most important investments - their vehicles.

The company grew steadily throughout the next decade, moving to new offices in downtown Cleveland, Ohio, in 1951. In 1955, after the death of Joe Lewis, Jack Green became CEO and Peter Lewis, Joe's son, began his career with Progressive. Peter brought fresh ideas and began looking for ways to distinguish the company from its competitors. In 1956, the company formed Progressive Casualty Company to write auto insurance for high risk drivers (today the company serves all types of drivers).

The growing company expanded in the 1960s and formed the Progressive Corporation. In 1965, Peter Lewis took over the reins of the company when he assumed the title of CEO, a title he still held when he celebrated his 45th anniversary with the company in 2000. The compan went public in 1971.

Plans include a Preferred Provider Option (PPO) medical plan with a choice of different reimbursement options, Exclusive Provider Option (EPO) medical plan and, in some areas, a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plan. A High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) is also available, which enables access to a Health Savings Account (or HSA).
Each plan offers different levels of medical coverage at different costs to you. You can choose the plan that best meets you and your family's personal health care needs.
Prescription coverage is provided with most medical options and includes retail pharmacy reimbursement as well as mail order coverage.

Clinical Services
At our major locations, you will have access to in-house clinical services with nurse practitioners and physicians on staff to care for you and your family. For a nominal fee, medical personnel can provide convenient, cost-effective, high quality health care for a large variety of medial conditions to you, your spouse and your covered dependents.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
Progressive's Employee Assistance Program (EAP) offers our people and their dependents a place to address personal problems with the assistance of trained, licensed counselors. You pay no costs for up to eight counseling sessions per problem per family member per year. Magellan Behavioral Health, an independent contractor, is the EAP contract service for all Progressive people.

Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance

Time Off
You start earning time off as soon as you join Progressive, building a bank of time throughout your years of service. Time is credited as it is accrued and you can use it at your discretion. Our contemporary approach to earned time off is an example of the ways we creatively reward our people and give them the flexibility they need for individual priorities and lifestyle.

Retirement Security Program
You'll have access to two retirement plans to help you save for the future: the voluntary Long-Term Savings Plan (LTSP), which is Progressive's 401(k); and a Self-Directed Retirement Plan (SDRP), another defined plan to which Progressive contributes.

Long-term Saving Plan
This tax-advantaged savings plan offers a wide range of investment options and a company match. You are eligible to start contributing to the LTSP after 30 days of service.

Self-Directed Retirement Plan
This plan is completely paid for by Progressive. After one year of service, all people are automatically eligible (provided you are 21 and work at least 20 hours per week).

Child Care Subsidy
Helping balance your family life is important, so Progressive extends child care subsidies of $30 biweekly for the first child and $10 biweekly for each additional child, after six months of service.

To help you expand your skill base, educational assistance is available after one year of service, provided you work at least 20 hours per week. There is also assistance for individual classes, insurance education and proficiency tests.
