Porsche is a German company known for manufacturing
some of the finest sports cars in the world including the Boxster,
911 Carrera and Cayenne SUV.
In September of 1984, Porsche Cars North
America, Inc. (PCNA), became the exclusive importer, marketer,
and distributor of Porsche automobiles for the United States.
The headquarters are located in Atlanta, GA, and PCNA also has
three service training centers and a network of "field"
employees who are located in major cities throughout the U.S.,
providing sales, service, and parts support to the dealerships.
In addition, PCNA has an office in Ontario,
Canada that provides support to dealers and customers in Canada,
and Porsche Financial Services, headquartered in Lisle, Illinois,
provides financing and leasing activities.
Porsche Motorsport North America provides
racing assistance, parts and service from their home base in
Southern California. Porsche Logistics Services, LLC provides
parts distribution from Ontario, CA and Atlanta, GA.
In fiscal 2007, a record total of 36,680
vehicles were delivered to customers in the USA and Canada
two percent more than the previous year figure of 36,095 units.
Compared with the previous year, which
however saw the discontinuation of the predecessor model, Cayenne
sales soared by 20 per cent to 13,370 units. The 911 achieved
13,153 unit sales, representing a growth of four per cent. Most
in demand were the top variants 911 Turbo and 911 Turbo Cabriolet.
The Boxster series accounted for 10,153 units, with sales of
the Cayman models amounting to 6,249 vehicles.
North America accounts for 40% of total
Porsche sales volume.
Porsche was rated No. 1 in customer satisfaction
for new vehicles according to a survey by research firm JD Power
and Associates.
History
The company was founded by German automotive
engineer Ferdinand Porsche, who worked for Daimler and helped
develop the Mercedes SS and SSK sports car.
On June 8, 1948 the first sports car bearing
the name Porsche is built based on Volkswagen parts and is known
as the Porsche 356. The 10,000th Porsche 356 is sold in 1956.
Ferdinand Porsche would die at the age
of 75 in 1951 but the company would continue on with his son
Ferdinand Alexander.
The Porsche 911 was developed in 1963.
