The Neiman Marcus Group operates luxury chain
of retail department stores. The company is comprised of the
Specialty Retail Stores division - which includes Neiman Marcus
Stores and Bergdorf Goodman - and the Direct Marketing division,
Neiman Marcus Direct.
These renowned retailers offer upscale assortments of apparel, accessories, jewelry, beauty and decorative home products to the affluent consumer. The Company operates 40 Neiman Marcus Stores across the United States and two Bergdorf Goodman stores in Manhattan. The Company also operates 25 Last Call clearance centers. These store operations total more than 6 million gross square feet.
Neiman Marcus Direct, the company's direct-to-consumer
business, conducts both print catalog and online operations under
the Neiman Marcus, Horchow and Bergdorf Goodman brand names.
Under the Neiman Marcus brand, Neiman Marcus Direct primarily
offers women's apparel, accessories and home furnishings. Horchow
offers quality home furnishings, linens, decorative accessories
and tabletop items.
The company reported $4.68 billion in sales for fiscal 2008. It announced in January plans to cut 375 jobs due to declining sales.
History
1907:
Neiman Marcus opens on September 10 at Elm and Murphy Streets
in Dallas. Neiman Marcus, founded by Herbert Marcus Sr, his sister
Carrie Marcus Neiman, and her husband A.L. Neiman.
1913:
Fire destroys the original store and all inventory.
1939:
Neiman Marcus sends a magazine-size holiday catalog that becomes
an annual mailer.
1951:
Stanley Marcus commissions "Mariposa", a large-scale
mobile by Alexander Calder, and with that the new Neiman Marcus
Art Collection is born.
1951:
Neiman Marcus opens a second store in Dallas in Preston Center.
1989:
Neiman Marcus reaches $1 billion in sales.
2005:
The Neiman Marcus Group goes private with a majority of the equity
ownership held by Warburg Pincus and the Texas Pacific Group.
2006:
NMG revenues surpass $4 billion.
