Comcast Corporation owns a controlling 51% interest in NBCUniversal, with GE holding a 49% stake. Comcast announced in February it will buy out GE's entire 49% equity stake in NBCUniversal for approximately $16.7 billion.
NBCUniversal also plans to purchase from GE the properties used by NBCUniversal at 30 Rockefeller Plaza and CNBC's headquarters in Englewood Cliffs, NJ for approximately $1.4 billion.
NBCUniversal's TV networks are made up of the flagship NBC network, Telemundo and several top cable networks including CNBC, MSNBC, USA Network, The Weather Channel, Bravo, NBC Sports Network (fomerly Versus), E! Entertainment Television, Oxygen, Golf Channel and Syfy.
The NBC Television Network's strength derives from combining NBC's strong national identity and programming with the local identity and programming of its affiliates in communities across America. The sale of advertising time enables the NBC Television Network to provide programming to the public free of charge.
Affiliated television stations are an integral part of NBC's overall broadcast service. The NBC Television Network broadcasts approximately 5,000 hours of TV programming each year, transmitting to more than 200 affiliated stations across the United States. These independently owned affiliates then broadcast the NBC signal to an estimated 99 percent of all homes in the United States with television sets.
NBC will broadcast the Olympic Games from 2014-2020 as part of a $4.3 billion Olympics contract. NBC has broadcast 10 Olympic Games since 1992.
NBC also owns 10 local stations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco Bay Area, Dallas-Fort Worth, Washington, D.C., Miami, San Diego and Connecticut.
Universal Films has produced many top box office movies including Identity Thief, Les Miserables, Ted, Jurassic Park and more.
Telemundo leads the industry in production and distribution of high-quality Hispanic content in the U.S. Telemundo reaches 94% of U.S. Hispanic viewers through 14 owned stations, 48 local affiliates and over 1,000 cable affiliates.
CNBC also has channels in Europe, the Middle East, Asia-Pacific and Africa and CNBC World.
The company also operates Universal Parks and Resorts, which serve millions of visitors each year in Hollywood, Orlando, Singapore and Japan.
NBCUniversal also operates the web properties Daily Candy, Fandango, iVillage and has a stake in the video site Hulu with Fox Entertainment and ABC.
For 2012, NBCUniversal reported revenues of $23.8 billion, a 12.7% increase.
History
NBC Universal was formed in May 2004 by the merger of General Electric's NBC with Vivendi Universal Entertainment.
In January 2011, NBC Universal merged with Comcast to form NBCUniversal Media LLC which includes Comcast cable channels and web properties. Comcast paid $6.5 billion in cash to GE and held a 51% stake in the new company with GE holding 49%.
