MVP Health Plan, is an independent, not-for-profit
corporation licensed in both New York state and Vermont. The
MVP Health Insurance Co. and MVP Select Care Inc. are for-profit
subsidiary companies. MVP Health Plan Inc. is the sole owner
of both of these subsidiaries.
Collectively these companies provide health,
dental and other employee benefits to 700,000 individuals primarily
in New York state and Vermont.
MVP has been praised for strong customer
service and satisfaction. In 2007, it had revenues of $2.03 billion
and net income of $63.2 million.
MVP Health Care began in 1980 when a group
of physicians and community leaders in the Schenectady, N.Y.
area formed the Schenectady County Foundation for Medical Care
with the goal of establishing a health maintenance organization
(HMO) that would provide their community with high-quality care,
using private practice physicians in a cost-contained environment.
The result was Mohawk Valley Physicians' Health Plan Inc, which
began operating in Schenectady and Saratoga Counties in July
1983.
The company merged with Preferred Care
of Rochester in 2006.
