Morgan Stanley is one of the world's top financial services companies. It is a leader in investment banking, private wealth management, bond and stock trading.
In September due to the financial turmoil in the stock markets, Morgan Stanley converted into a bank holding company to allow it to accept deposits from customers and also funds from the Federal Reserve.
Morgan Stanley is a leader in financing Initial Public Offerings, Mergers & Acquisitions and serving as financial advisors to major corporations. It has over 600 offices in 37 countries.
The company had $528 billion under management in Nov. 2008.
For fiscal 2008, Morgan Stanley reported revenues of $24.7 billion, down from $28 billion the previous year. Net income was $1.7 billion. The company said it is looking to reduce expenses by $2 billion this year.
The company's bonus pool was down 50% from a year ago. The firm's top three executives received no bonus last year.
History
In 1935, Henry Morgan, Harold Stanley and
others left JP Morgan & Co. and Drexel & Co. to form
investment banking firm Morgan Stanley. In its first full year,
the firm achieved 24% market share of public stock offerings.
In 1941, Morgan Stanley joins the New York Stock Exchange and
entered the brokerage business.
In 1964, the company created the first
computer model for performing financial analysis. In 1967, a
Paris division was opened to pursue the growing European securities
market.
Morgan Stanley would establish a real estate
financing division in 1967 and created a Mergers and Acquisitions
division in 1971.
Morgan Stanley merged with Dean Witter,
Discover & Co. in 1997 to form a dominant force in securities
and asset management.
The company spun off the Discover Card
business in an IPO in 2007.
