History
In 1935, Henry Morgan, Harold Stanley and others left JP Morgan & Co. and Drexel & Co. to form investment banking firm Morgan Stanley. In its first full year, the firm achieved 24% market share of public stock offerings. In 1941, Morgan Stanley joins the New York Stock Exchange and entered the brokerage business.
In 1964, the company created the first computer model for performing financial analysis. In 1967, a Paris division was opened to pursue the growing European securities market.
Morgan Stanley would establish a real estate financing division in 1967 and created a Mergers and Acquisitions division in 1971.
Morgan Stanley merged with Dean Witter, Discover & Co. in 1997 to form a dominant force in securities and asset management.
The company spun off the Discover Card business in an IPO in 2007.
The company converted into a bank holding company in September 2008 following the financial crisis that year which allowed it to accept deposits from customers and access to funding from the Federal Reserve.
