Kohl's emphasizes national brands at discount prices. Some stores are located in malls, but most are free-standing locations. Over the past several years, Kohl's has opened many new stores and has expanded into the Northeast and California. The company ended 2008 with 1,004 stores in 48 states, compared with 929 stores in 47 states at the same time last year. In 2008, Kohl's opened 75 stores. In fiscal 2009, the Company expects to open approximately 55 stores and remodel 51 stores. For fiscal 2008, Kohl's reported revenues of $16.38 billion and net income of $885 million. Kevin Mansell, Kohl's president and CEO, said, "We expect 2009 to be just as challenging from a macro-economic perspective. We are planning conservatively in our sales expectations, inventory levels and expenses. We will be very competitive in order to gain market share in this environment. We will continue to invest prudently in stores, both new and remodeled, technology and talent to ensure our profitable growth in the long run." Approximately 1,500 people work at Kohl's corporate headquarters. The company has nine distribution centers located in Menomonee Falls, WI; Winchester, VA; Findlay, OH; Blue Springs, MO; Corsicana, TX; Mamakating, NY; San Bernardino, CA; Monroe, OH; and Macon, GA. History Max Kohl built his first supermarket store in 1946 and would become a chain in Wisconsin known as Kohl's Food Stores. In 1962, he started his first department store in Brookfield, Wi, also called Kohl's Department Stores. In 1978, The Kohl's Corporation becomes
wholly owned by the BATUS Retail Group, a subsidiary of British-American
Tobacco Company. While owned by BATUS, Kohl's expands from 10
to 39 stores throughout Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana. Kohl's went public in 1992. Herb Kohl helped manage the Kohl stores and is currently a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin and owner of the Milwaukee Bucks NBA team.
