Home Depot is the world's largest home-improvement
retailer and second largest retailer in the U.S. Its bright orange
stores are the epitome of "big-box stores" open in
suburbs across the U.S.
The stores stock up to 40,000 different
kinds of building materials and lawn and garden products. Services
include free in-store clinics for honing home improvement skills
as well as design and decorating consultation, truck and tool
rental, and home delivery.
Home Depot stores cater to both do-it-yourselfers
and professional customers who serve the home improvement construction
and building maintenance market segments.
At the end of 2009, the company operated 2,244 stores, which included 1,978 The Home Depot stores in the United States (including the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the territory of the U.S. Virgin Islands and the territory of Guam), 179 stores in Canada, 79 stores in Mexico and 10 stores in China.
In fiscal 2009, Home Depot reported sales of $66.2 billion, a drop of 7.2 percent, and net earnings of $2.66 billion. The company reported average ticket per sale of $51.76 in 2009 and weekly average sales per store of $563,000.
In January, the company reportedly plans to close three smaller pilot stores and eliminate 1,000 jobs nationwide to centralize support operations. A 34-store chain of Home Expo Design Centers was closed in 2009.
Home Depot plans to open 6 net new stores in 2010.
History
Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank, forever
changed the home improvement industry when they opened the first
The Home Depot stores in Atlanta, Georgia on June 22, 1979. The
original partnership was called "MB Associates."
The original stores stocked around 25,000
products and were attached to Treasure Island stores. Today,
on average, The Home Depot offers 40,000 products and is approximately
106,000 square feet.
The company went public on Nasdaq in 1981
and moves to NYSE in 1984. Home Depot would pass the $1 billion
mark in sales in 1986.
The company sold its wholesale business
HD Supply for $8.8 billion to a group of private equity firms
on August 2007.
