Hertz is the leading global car rental company, operating in 145 countries from over 8,000 corporate and licensee locations. The company offers cars, trucks and equipment for rent.

Hertz is the market leader in car rentals in the U.S. with close to a 28% market share during 2007. The company has made a major investment in the off-airport market in the United States, generating revenues of close to $1 billion in 2007. It now has nearly 1,600 off-airport locations in the U.S., with 200 new rental stores open in the last year.

Hertz Equipment Rental Corp. is one of the largest equipment rental companies in the United States and Canada combined and in France and Spain. HERC rents a broad range of earthmoving equipment, material handling equipment, aerial and electrical equipment, air compressors, generators, pumps, small tools, compaction equipment and construction-related trucks. HERC also derives revenues from the sale of new equipment and consumables.

The company reported worldwide revenue of $8.6 billion in 2007. Net income was $264.5 million.

Car rentals made up 79.7% of revenue in 2007 and 20.2% from equipment rentals. 67.4% of revenue came from the United States. Half of rentals at Hertz are for business use.

At the end of 2007, Hertz had 338,800 cars in its fleet in the U.S. and 174,300 internationally. In the U.S., 27% of Hertz cars were GM vehicles, 24% made by Ford and 13% by Toyota.

Revenues from customers booking online at hertz.com and other travel websites increased to over $1.7 billion last year.

Hertz began offering Toyota Prius cars in 2007 and will have 2,500 available for rent by 2008.

The company has 29,350 employees: 20,550 in the U.S. and 8,800 in international operations.

History

Hertz began renting cars in 1918 and established the first national franchise car renting system in 1925.

In 1932, Hertz opened the first airport rent-a-car location at Chicago's Midway Airport.

Hertz Equipment Rental Corporation is formed in 1965.

Ford acquired an ownership interest in Hertz in 1987. Hertz was sold by Ford in 2005 to private investors and went public on the NYSE in 2006.
