The Hartford Financial Services Group is
one of the largest investment and insurance companies in the
United States. The Hartford Stag logo is a symbol of dependability.
The Hartford provides: mutual funds and
annuities; life insurance and group and employee benefits; automobile
and homeowners products; and business insurance.
The Hartford serves customers through independent
agents and brokers, financial institutions, affinity groups and
via the Internet. Approximately 11,000 independent agencies and
more than 100,000 registered broker/dealers sell the company's
products. The company is the largest seller of individual annuities
in the U.S. and has been a provider of auto and homeowners insurance
to members of AARP since 1984.
The company has 31,000 employees worldwide. Of this total, 30,000 are in the United States and 12,500 in Connecticut.
In 2008, the company reported revenues of $9.2 billion and net loss of $2.7 billion. At the end of 2008, The Hartford reported assets of $287 billion.
"This was clearly the most challenging year in our company's nearly 200-year history," said Ramani Ayer, chairman and chief executive officer of The Hartford. "The capital markets proved to be especially challenging during the latter half of 2008, particularly affecting our equity-based businesses and investment performance. Even still, we took several actions to finish 2008 well capitalized and well prepared to deliver on our commitments to customers."
The company announced 500 job cuts in late 2008.
History
The company was founded In 1810 when a
