Genentech was founded on April 7, 1976 by venture capitalist Robert Swanson and biochemist Dr. Herbert Boyer as the first biotechnology company.

In 1977, Genentech produced the first human protein (somatostatin) in a microorganism (E. coli bacteria). In 1978, human insulin was cloned by Genentech scientists. In 1979, Human growth hormone was cloned by Genentech scientists.

Genentech went public in a highly-successful IPO in 1980.

In March 2009, Genentech became a member of the Roche Group, and Genentech now serves as the headquarters for all Roche pharmaceutical operations in the United States.

Vacations/Time Off
Holidays. Twelve paid holidays are offered per year, ten of which are scheduled and 2 floating days.

Leave of Absence may be provided for family care, maternity, medical conditions, parental care or personal leave.

Sabbatical of six continuous weeks, paid time off is earned after completing six years of service.

Sick Time. Short-term and long-term disability plans are available.

Vacation. Employees receive three weeks paid vacation per year.
