Dana is a leading supplier of axle, driveshaft,
engine, frame, chassis, and transmission technologies. It develops
parts for nearly every automaker in the world, which collectively
produce more than 60 million vehicles per year. Parts are used
in both commercial and regular vehicles.
Dana employs 46,000 people at 176 facilities
in 28 countries.
The company reported sales of $8.6 billion
in 2005 with a net loss of $1.6 billion.
The company is currently in Chapter 11
bankruptcy reorganization.
Major customers include: AGCO, BMW, Caterpillar,
DaimlerChrysler, Ford, General Motors, International Truck and
Engine, Manitou, PACCAR, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Renault-Nissan,
Tamrock, Toyota, VW, Volvo Group.
Dana's products are dependent on steel
and the higher prices of the material have made the company forecast
lower earnings this year.
History
In 1904, Clarence Spicer, a 29-year old
engineering student from Edelstein, IL., leaves Cornell
University to manufacture universal joints in Plainfield, N.J.
Within two years, customers include Buick, Wayne, Mack, Olds,
Stevens-Duryea, American Motor Car, Diamond T, and E.R. Thomas.
In 1905, Spicer Universal Joint Manufacturing Company is incorporated
in the state of New Jersey.
Charles Dana, a 33-year old attorney from
New York City, joins Spicer Manufacturing Company in 1914 and
becomes President and Treasurer in 1916. Spicer died in 1939.
The company was renamed Dana Corporation in 1946.
