Weill Cornell Medical College is the medical school of Cornell University. It is located in the Upper East Side of Manhattan even though the main Cornell campus is in Ithaca, NY about 223 miles away.
Weill Cornell Medical College is among the top-ranked clinical and medical research centers in the country. In addition to offering degrees in medicine, Weill Cornell also has PhD programs in biomedical research and education at the Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences, and with neighboring Sloan-Kettering Institute and The Rockefeller University, has established a joint MD-PhD program for students to intensify their pursuit of Weill Cornell's triple mission of education, research, and patient care.
The college is divided into 24 basic science and patient care departments that focus on the sciences underlying clinical medicine and/or encompass the study, treatment, and prevention of human diseases.
In addition to its affiliation with NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Cornell Medical College and the Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences maintain major affiliations with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, The Rockefeller University, the Hospital for Special Surgery, as well as with the metropolitan-area institutions that constitute NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare Network. Weill Cornell Medical College and the Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences are accredited by the Liaison Committee for Medical Education of the American Medical Association and the Association of American Medical Colleges.
Tuitiion and fees for 2013 are $49,990 per student with an additional $23,000 in living expenses.
Cornell Medical enrolls about 101 students each class year with about 6,000 applicants.
In January, the school received $75 million from Sandra and Edward Meyer to create the Meyer Cancer Center which will use state-of-the-art technologies for cancer research.
History
The school was founded as the Cornell University Medical College on April 14, 1898, with an endowment by businessman Col. Oliver Payne. It was established in New York City because Ithaca, where the main campus is located, was deemed too small to offer adequate clinical training opportunities.
In 1998, Cornell Medical College was renamed Weill Medical College of Cornell University following a $400 million donation from Sanford Weill, former Chairman of Citigroup and a Cornell alumnus.
The school has been affiliated with what is now New York-Presbyterian Hospital since 1927.
