In fiscal 2008, Coach reported sales of $3.18 billion, up 22% from the previous year. Net income was $742 million.
CEO Lew Frankfort said in a news release: "Our overall sales growth in 2009 will be driven by both distribution -- through new and expanded stores -- and higher productivity, fueled by product innovation and excellent service. During Fiscal Year 2009, we will open about 40 new North American retail stores, at least six U.S. factory outlets, and 10-15 new locations in Japan, along with expanding key locations in both geographies. In addition, we expect to open about 30 international locations, including at least 5 of our own Coach stores in Greater China."
History
Coach was founded in 1941 as a family-run
workshop in a Manhattan loft. Six artisans handcrafted a collection
of high-quality leathergoods using skills passed down from generation
to generation. Discerning consumers soon began to seek out the
high standards of Coach workmanship.
The founder of Coach was first inspired
by a baseball glove when he saw its distinctive markings and
how supple it became with use. After refining it, making it softer
and stronger, he created Coach's first handbag. Since then, innovations
in leather finishes, new grains and colors, and modern materials
continue to fascinate us. But this glove-tanned leather remains
a Coach tradition. And it still burnishes as beautifully as it
did back when Babe Ruth played baseball.
In 1999, Coach launched its on-line store
at www.coach.com.
The company went public in 2000 after being
spun off from Sara Lee.
