Circuit City was the nation's second largest electronics store chain behind Best Buy. It is a top retailer of DVDs, computers, camcorders and TVs.

The company announced it would go out of business and shut its remaining 567 stores after failing to find a buyer for the money losing chain. About 34,000 full- and part-time workers will lose their jobs.

The company is set to close all stores by Sunday, March 8.

Circuit City Superstores are approximately 33,000 square feet on average and offer a large selection of brand-name consumer electronics, personal computers and entertainment software as well as related services.

In fiscal 2008, the company reported sales of $11.7 billion, a decline from $12.4 billion the previous year, and net loss of $321.4 million.

History

Circuit City began in 1949 when Samuel Wurtzel opened the first Wards store in Richmond, VA. The company soon had four stores that sold TVs and appliances. In 1977, the first Circuit City stores were launched focusing on home video and audio products. The company opened more stores around the country and changed its name to Circuit City stores in 1984.
