CF Industries, Inc., the major operating subsidiary of CF Industries Holdings, Inc., is one of the largest manufacturers and distributors of nitrogen and phosphate fertilizer products in North America.

CF Industries serves both wholesale distributors and resellers and other customers in the agricultural, industrial, and lawn and garden businesses, providing nitrogen fertilizers including ammonia, urea, and urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) solution and ammoniated phosphate fertilizers including diammonium phosphate (DAP) and monoammonium phosphate (MAP) through the most extensive fertilizer distribution system in North America. The company ships via barge, rail, pipeline and truck. It also serves offshore customers, primarily with phosphate fertilizers, thanks to its export capability through the Port of Tampa, Florida.

In fiscal 2007, CF Industries Holdings, Inc. had revenues of nearly $2.8 billion and net income of $372.7 million due to strong global demand for fertilizer. Its share of the fertilizer market in key Corn Belt markets is 26 percent for nitrogen and 19 percent for phosphate.

The company also exports a significant portion of its phosphate output, primarily to Latin and South American markets.

CF Industries, Inc. manufactures nitrogen fertilizer at two large complexes, located in Donaldsonville, LA and Medicine Hat, Alberta. The company manufactures phosphate fertilizer at mining and production operations in Central Florida.

Its Donaldsonville, LA Nitrogen Complex is North America's largest and likely its most flexible operation. The complex produces anhydrous ammonia, granular urea, and urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) solution.

Its Medicine Hat, Alberta Nitrogen Complex is Canada's largest. The complex produces anhydrous ammonia and granular urea.

Its Central Florida Phosphate Operations include a rock mine and beneficiation plant in Hardee County, an integrated fertilizer complex in Plant City, and terminal and warehousing facilities at the Port of Tampa.

In addition to its manufacturing capabilities, the company has the ability to source products from offshore producers, receive them at its Donaldsonville, LA nitrogen complex and its Tampa terminal, and market them through its distribution network.

History

Founded in 1946 as a fertilizer brokerage operation by a group of regional agricultural cooperatives, CF Industries grew by expanding its distribution capabilities and diversifying into fertilizer manufacturing. Through 2002, the company operated as a typical supply cooperative. However, in 2003, in response to changing market conditions, it adopted a new business model that established financial performance, rather than the traditional cooperative charge of providing an assured supply of product to its owners, as its principal objective.

In 2005, an Initial Public Offering completed the company's transition and established CF Industries Holdings, Inc. as a public company.
