CF Industries, Inc., the major operating subsidiary of CF Industries Holdings, Inc., is one of the largest manufacturers and distributors of nitrogen and phosphate fertilizer products in North America.
CF Industries serves both wholesale distributors and resellers and other customers in the agricultural, industrial, and lawn and garden businesses, providing nitrogen fertilizers including ammonia, urea, and urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) solution and ammoniated phosphate fertilizers including diammonium phosphate (DAP) and monoammonium phosphate (MAP) through the most extensive fertilizer distribution system in North America. The company ships via barge, rail, pipeline and truck. It also serves offshore customers, primarily with phosphate fertilizers, thanks to its export capability through the Port of Tampa, Florida.
CF Industries operates an integrated manufacturing and distribution system, providing agricultural and industrial customers a reliable source of nitrogen and phosphate fertilizers. The company manufactures nitrogen products at seven large complexes, located in Courtright, ON, Donaldsonville, LA, Medicine Hat, AB, Port Neal, IA, Verdigris, OK, Woodward, OK, and Yazoo City, MS. It manufactures phosphate at mining and production operations in Central Florida. It distributes products through one of the industry’s largest networks of terminals and warehouses, many of them in Midwestern states with excellent access to rail, water, and pipeline transport. CF Industries also serves international customers through KEYTRADE AG, a leading global fertilizer trading company in which it acquired a 50 percent interest in 2007, and owns 50% joint ventures in the U.K. and The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
In addition to its manufacturing capabilities, the company has the ability to source products from offshore producers, receive them at its Donaldsonville, LA nitrogen complex and its Tampa terminal, and market them through its distribution network.
In fiscal 2010, CF Industries Holdings, reported net sales of $4.0 billion, a 52% increase from 2009. Total sales volume was 13.3 million tons. Net earnings were $349.2 million for the year.
History
Founded in 1946 as a fertilizer brokerage operation by a group of regional agricultural cooperatives, CF Industries grew by expanding its distribution capabilities and diversifying into fertilizer manufacturing. Through 2002, the company operated as a typical supply cooperative. However, in 2003, in response to changing market conditions, it adopted a new business model that established financial performance, rather than the traditional cooperative charge of providing an assured supply of product to its owners, as its principal objective.
In 2005, an Initial Public Offering completed the company's transition and established CF Industries Holdings, Inc. as a public company.
In 2010, CF Industries acquired Terra Industries Inc. Following this acquisition, CF Industries is positioned as a nitrogen bellwether in the global fertilizer industry and the premier nitrogen and phosphate fertilizer manufacturer in North America.
