Buffets, Inc. is the nation's largest steak-buffet restaurant company. It currently operates 350 restaurants in 35 states, comprised of 340 steak-buffet restaurants and 10 Tahoe Joe's Famous Steakhouse restaurants. The restaurants are principally operated under the Old Country Buffet, HomeTown Buffet, Ryan's and Fire Mountain brands.
The buffet restaurants include steak for a dinner and include a wide variety of items including fried and baked chicken, fried and baked fish, mashed potatoes, salads and desserts. Most locations have breakfast on weekends.
Buffets Inc. employs approximately 18,000 workers and serves approximately 100 million customers annually.
The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy twice in 2008 and 2012. It most recently emerged from Chapter 11 in July 2012 and closed over 140 restaurants.
History
The company was founded by Roe Hatlen and C. Dennis Scott in 1983. Scott left in 1989 to start HomeTown Buffet, but the two chains merged back together in September 1996.
On November 1, 2006, Buffets Inc. acquired Ryan's Restaurant Group adding 340 Ryan's Grill Buffet and Bakery and Fire Mountain Grills locations.
The company had a total of 675 restaurants following its merger with Ryan's and went into bankruptcy for the first time in 2008 and emerged in April 2009.
The company filed bankruptcy again in January 2012 and immediately closed 81 restaurants.
