Apple Opens 24 Hour Store on Fifth Avenue

POSTED May 22, 2006

NEW YORK -- Apple Computer opened its second store in Manhattan on Friday and this one is the most ambitious of all.

The new store is located at the GM Building on Fifth Avenue across from the Plaza Hotel (which is being renovated) and opposite the southeast corner of Central Park. The store features a stunning glass cube above ground with Apple logo that cost tens of millions of dollars to build. Inside the cube, a staircase with glass steps leads to the store underground.

Down below, there are over 100 Macintosh computers and 200 iPods which users can try out and access the Internet. This is Apple's 147th store worldwide but what makes it unique is that it will remain open 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. It is probably the only electronics store that is open round the clock.

"We opened our first New York store in SoHo in 2002, and it has been successful beyond our dreams. Now we're thrilled to open our second New York store on Fifth Avenue," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "With outstanding service and an amazing location open 24 hours a day, we think the Apple Store Fifth Avenue is going to be a favorite destination for New Yorkers and people around the world."

Jobs had a big role in the design of the store especially the glass cube that will like become a heavily photographed tourist spot in the city.

More than 300 workers are staffing the store round the clock, including sales personnel and Mac Geniuses, who are trained in support and repair problems.

The new store features a combined 45-foot Genius Bar, iPod Bar and The Studio where customers can get face-to-face support, free advice and work on creative projects at any hour of the day or night.
