acquired by private equity firms TPG Capital and GS Capital Partners
for $71.50 per share or $27.5 billion.
In 2006, Alltel reported revenues of $7.8

History
The company was originally founded in 1943
as Allied Telephone in Little Rock, AR.
Allied and Mid-Continent merge to form
Alltel in 1983. The company would launch its first wireless system
in Charlotte, NC in 1985.
In 1993, Alltel opens its first wireless
retail store and begins offering long distance service in 1996.
The company acquired Western Wireless in
2005 for $6.5 billion.
