The strengths of Alcon, CIBA VISION and Novartis Ophthalmics unite into one eye care business with Alcon becoming the second largest division of Novartis. Alcon develops, manufactures, and distributes hundreds of eye care products in more than 180 countries and operations in 75 countries.
Alcon's core business is centered on three
key divisions Surgical, Pharmaceutical and Consumer Vision
Care.
Surgical
Alcon offers the industry's most comprehensive portfolio of ophthalmic surgical products, enabling surgeons to achieve optimal results for their patients. As the worldwide leader in ophthalmic surgical products, Alcon occupies the premier position in surgical suites across the globe and manufactures and markets products for all ocular surgical procedures. As the developer and manufacturer of the worlds' most preferred line of intraocular lenses, AcrySof, which is implanted globally in more than 50 million lenses, Alcon is redefining vision for the aging population.
Pharmaceutical
Alcon continues to build its position
as the worldwide leader in pharmaceuticals for the eye by continuing
to advance treatments for diseases such as glaucoma, infection
and allergy, while also expanding focus into relatively unknown
areas such as, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and
other sight-threatening diseases. Alcon's intraocular pressure
(IOP)-lowering TRAVATAN Z Solution is changing the treatment
of glaucoma, still a leading cause of blindness today.
Consumer Vision Care
In addition to Alcon’s leadership role in surgical and pharmaceutical eye care, the company is now one of the largest manufacturers of contact lenses and lens care products in the world due to the integration of CIBA VISION into Alcon. The three leading brands of contact lenses from CIBA VISION include AIR OPTIX, DAILIES and FreshLook. These lenses are complemented by Alcon´s leading lens care brands such as OPTI-FREE and Clear Care Cleaning and Disinfecting Solution from CIBA VISION.
Alcon offices are located in 75 countries
around the world in regions including Canada and the Far East;
Europe, Middle East and Africa; Latin America and the Caribbean;
and the United States.
Alcon has 2,000 associates devoted to research and development.
In 2010, Alcon had sales of $7.2 billion and net income of $2.2 billion.
In April, Alcon completed its merger with Switzerland's Novartis and is the second-largest division of the company. Novartis Group companies employ approximately 119,000 full-time-equivalent associates and operate in more than 140 countries around the world with $50.6 billion in worldwide sales.
U.S. headquarters are in Dallas with global headquarters in Switzerland.
