ADP pays 1-in-6 private sector workers in the U.S. and operates in 26 countries.

The company also provides services for brokerage and financial services firms, auto, truck and RV dealers as well as property and casualty industries. Services are also provided to clients online. ADP has over 570,000 clients worldwide.

In fiscal 2011, ADP reported revenues of $9.8 billion and net income of $1.25 billion.

In April, ADP announced it completed the acquisition of the human resource solutions subsidiary of SHPS, Inc., a highly respected provider of benefits administration services.

History

In 1949, the company began as Automatic Payrolls Inc. and founded by Henry Taub as a manual payroll processing service in Northern New Jersey. Taub was just 21 and an accountant with a degree from NYU. The company started with one client and finished its first year with $2,000 in revenues.

Companies would soon begin to outsource important functions to ADP from payroll to recordkeeping which led to steady growth. ADP would go public in 1961.
